Mortal Kombat
A great debate sweeps across G.I. Joe fans when it comes to whether or not the Mortal Kombat line of action figures, based upon the smash hit 1992 arcade videogame, are officially Joes or not. One half argues that since the G.I. Joe logo never actually appears on the packaging, they cannot be G.I. Joes; the other half argues that since Hasbro produced them and they share the same parts/general feel as G.I. Joes, they must be Joes.
While the debate rages on, there is no doubt that the Mortal Kombat line of Hasbro action figures were heavily inspired by the G.I. Joe line and offered many kids the opportunity to do battle without the blood and carnage associated with the videogame. The addition of a Street Fighter II line, however, allowed for the ultimate gaming crossover that every fighting game fan is still patiently waiting for over twenty years later.
A special movie edition of several figures was made and re-released around the time that the Mortal Kombat motion picture hit theaters. The packaging included a sticker announcing the toy as a "Special Movie Edition." Most were repaints of classic figures, though the Shang Tsung looked considerably different.
Kombatants in this line included:
- Johnny Cage
- Sonya Blade
- Scorpion
- Sub-Zero
- Liu Kang
- Smoke
- Rayden
- Kano
- Reptile
- Goro (vs. Johnny Cage 2-Pack)
- Johnny Cage (vs. Goro 2-Pack Variation)
- Shang Tsung
- Shang Tsung (Figure included in the Dragon Wing)
The Special Movie Edition included these figures, as well as the 3rd variation of Shang Tsung using a different model (seen above):
- Scorpion (black arms and legs, solid yellow chest)
- Liu Kang (purple pants)
- Sub-Zero (see-through blue arms and legs)
- Goro
- Johnny Cage (karate gi)
- Sonya Blade (solid black clothing)
- Rayden (long-hair and in plastic robe)
- Shang Tsung (younger version)
